Day 1: Trip Out to Japan from Heathrow to Haneda
Day one then….
Early start, probably earlier than was strictly necessary. Always better to get there early I say. “Not this f@£&sing early!”said Tracey when we were at Heathrow over 6 hours before our flight! Ah well, such is life. Killed a bit of time in Costa then a LOT more time in the Three Bells pub.

Day 2: Arrival and First Night in Tokyo (Asakusa)
Checked in at the Asakusa Central Hotel which is all rather pleasant, quick shower and off out to womble about a bit. Found Kaminarimon and Sensoji temple in about five minutes then mooched about round the shops and eateries. Had a fantastic meal in a restaurant with beer and more Nihonshu before turning in for an earlyish night….

Day 3: Ueno Park, Ameyoko and Asakusa
It's 3:30am and yet again a member of the wide awake club so here's what we got up to today.
Walking.
A lot of walking.

Day 4: Kaminarimon, Sensoji, Skytree, Miura Anjin Memorial
Got up at stupid o'clock this morning (well, I did: Tracey was still spark out) so I could go and take photos of Kaminarimon and Sensoji before the forty billion tourists arrived.

Day 5: Shinjuku, Odakaya, Apa Hotel Asakusa-Kuramae, Akihabara
Went to Shinjuku today and did both extremes. Takashimaya (basically Selfridges) followed by McDonalds, (basically...well, McDonalds. But with Teriyaki burgers. Which are ace).

Day 6: Meeting up with Miki, Tsukiji, Roppongi and Tokyo Tower in a monsoon.
Fantastic morning! Up nice and early to scoot down the Asakusa and Hibiya lines to Tsukiji Market. We’d arranged to meet up with my first proper Japanese teacher Miki Umetani who Tracey had never met and who I hadn’t seen since she’d returned to Japan a few years ago.

Day 7: Sumo, Boat Trip, Asakusa Festival
Up an at ‘em around 7:30am today as we spotted a poster yesterday that said you could go to Nihombashi and watch some Rekishi (Sumo wrestlers) training at their stable. Looked it all up on t’Internet and it seemed like a bloody good idea and not too far on the tube either (same area we’d gone to see the Miura Anjin Memorial).

Day 8: Shinkansen to Kyoto, Ryokan and Honganji
Up relatively early so we could check out of the hotel, get one of the bags checked into the Takkyubin service and get across to Tokyo Station to catch the Shinkansen to Kyoto. As we only had 4 days booked in Kyoto we wanted to get there as early as possible. Checkout no problem and bag booked in quickly and efficiently (helps to do the paperwork the night before as that does take a while!) And off to Tokyo Eki we went.

Day 9: Toji Market, Gion, Ponto-chou
Up early to experience the Japanese breakfast that we’d booked the night before with Szymon as it looked really tasty and interesting. We did forego going down to eat in our yukata although several other guests did and perhaps we should have. When in Rome and all that. To be honest it’s not so much the yukata (we swan about them at home after all!) but I just can’t deal with slippers.

Day 10: Ōsaka, Ōsaka-jo and Kyoto Okonomiyaki
Today mostly involved getting up at sparrows, having another lovely breakfast in the Ryokan and then trekking to the station to catch the Shinkansen to Ōsaka for a planned day trip. First port of call was the ticket office to get our return tickets, together with a bit of prep to get the right words in place to make sure we got day return tickets.

Day 11: Kinkakuji, Nishijin Textile Museum, Fushimi
On today’s menu….
Starter: Kinkakuji
First Course: Nishijin Textile Centre
Second Course: Fushimi district including side dish of sake tasting
Dessert: Kyoto centre and Okonomiyaki again

Day 12: Hiroshima, Peace Park and Museum, Genbaku Dome
Up once again at daft o'clock to get packed up and check out of the ryokan. One last Japanese breakfast before we went and then we (and Pochi) said goodbye and thanks to the staff, and that we’d keep in touch. Which we have. On Facebook. Isn’t the Internet a wonderful thing! I know I’ve banged on about it but can’t recommend it highly enough.

Day 13: Saijo (Sake Town!)
Relatively early start in Hiroshima with a bit of a trek into town for breakfast. Revisited Mister Donut for a selection of salads, tofu and health….who are we kidding, it was coffee and doughnuts.

Day 14: Back to Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya and Kabukichō
Today involves mostly going back to Tokyo...
Checked out of the hotel fairly early in the morning, with Tracey again being “aided” by the robot assistant and me doing it the more traditional way with a human being. Perhaps I need to rephrase that. Never mind.

Day 15: Mooching about Kappabashi, Akihabara, Shibuya and Shinjuku.
This morning up at a bit after sparrows (for a change: feet starting to cane a bit in my case but I have been a very brave soldier and not moaned at all, not once*) Breakfast at Tully’s coffee (obviously health food and dietary fibre) before a quick mooch to the Shinjuku park to see what was what. Families on a weekend trip out mostly so we binned it and took on the tube to Kappabashi, kitchenware town. Checked this out briefly last week but only scratched the surface!

Day 16: Imperial Gardens, Shinyuku Gyoenmae Gardens, Shinyuku (Bloody!) Eki
Today was very much, as someone famously said, a game of two halves. Perhaps an advanced mathematician but more probably a ball game based TV mouthpiece. I don't know or pretend to understand such things. Anyway….

Day 17: Hakone
Up relatively early this morning to check out of the hotel and catch the Romancecar we’d (eventually) managed to book last night. Since it wasn’t leaving until 10:30am there wasn’t a huge amount of hurry and we’d got a decent idea where we were going after the last nights’ nonsense at Shinjuku Eki.

Day 18: Back to Tokyo (again)
Tuesday morning in Hakone and breakfast carried on from where last night's meal left off. A light knock on the door and we were escorted to our private dining room by our familiar hostess and presented with…well, again, just LOOK at it! And while you're looking at it, keep reminding yourself that that is BREAKFAST. For JUST ONE PERSON!

Day 19: Tsukiji, Triton Square, Tsukishima
Right, here goes then. Last full day blog entry from Japan itself.
Up stupid stupid early in Ginza so we could walk to Tsukiji fish market and see it in full swing. It was winding down when went round it last time with Miki San and it looked really interesting but go early or go home seems to be the moral of the story.

Day 20: The Haneda Airport debacle...and then home
Wasn't going to write a blog today but sometimes circumstances conspire against you.
Up at 5am to get our taxi at 5:30am for 8:50am flight out of Haneda. Just as well really...

Day 1: Overnight Stay at Heathrow and Trip Out to Haneda
Well, here we go again! Like we said at the end of last years’ blog – "we’ll be back".
Since we did the major tourist loop (Tokyo>Kyoto/Osaka>Hiroshima) last year, this years’ trip is slated to be a bit different.

Day 2: Arrival, Journey Out to Sendai and First Night
Uisuki and Daiou’s first step onto Japanese soil this morning. Well, figuratively at least – doing a Pope John Paul II and actively kissing the tarmac seems to be thoroughly discouraged!

Day 3: Zuihoden, Sendai Castle, Botanical Gardens
Day 3 then and a very much needed lie in a vain attempt to help shake off the jet lag. Is that how it works? Not really sure, but it didn’t work so hey-ho, off we trolled at about 11am to find something remotely resembling breakfast and then some proper sight-seeing.

Day 4: Tashirojima
Up REALLY REALLY FAR TOO EARLY OH MY GOD IT CAN'T BE TIME TO GET UP ALREADY I'M GOING TO DIE IT'S SO EARLY to catch the train to Tashirojima in the pursuit of seeing many cats. Would we? Who knows. There was always the possibility we’d go all that way and see 1 cat – but faint heart and all that…

Day 5: Journey to Morioka
Bit of a lie in this morning. We hadn’t bothered to book tickets for today’s Shinkansen as we were only going a short distance and we thought we’d take it easy rather than go off on the usual route march. Checked out of the hotel at around 10am and dragged our cases to the local Caffé Veloce for brekkie – today actually in time for the morning menu. And very welcome it was too – really nice coffee and sandwiches. Yes again.

Day 6: Morioka
Back to getting up early today and so down to breakfast by 8am so we’d be in plenty of time for the shuttle bus at 9:30ish. And breakfast did not disappoint, although the photo doesn’t do it justice. Again there was a Viking Menu (Buffet) to choose from with just about every option under the sun. Unfortunately including natto which got roundly ignored.

Day 7: Journey to Aomori
Ambled down to breakfast at our own pace this morning and consumed approximately half our own body weight in coffee and the (slightly overwhelming) choices at the buffet. I’ve made things like tamagoyaki a few times for breakfast but not sure I can be bothered to make steamed dumplings that early. But after this, perhaps once in a while I might be persuaded…

Day 8: Shōwa Daibutsu, Aomori Tower
Since today’s planned morning activity was to go and see the Shōwa Daibutsu and it wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon we didn’t feel the need to rush out this morning. So by the time we had dragged ourselves out of bed, worked out how to use the Japanese style kettle and drip coffee packs in the room (fiddly but great coffee) it was gone 10am. Pair of lazy sods eh!

Day 9: Hirosaki Castle
Today we have mostly been up (fairly) early to catch the train out to Hirosaki to go see the park, castle and flower festival. Looked good on the leaflet we picked up at the Tourist Information in Aomori so why not? In the UK I'm famous for not being impressed with parks and "autumn colours" but here... well, it's cultural innit?!

Day 10: Nebuta Exhibition, Journey to Hakodate, Goryōkaku Park and Tower
Up nice and early so we could see the Nebuta Matsuri exhibition before going to Hakodate. Checking out was friendly and efficient - and then we waited in the lift queue for ages - the only disadvantage of having reception on the fifth floor. Very impressed with The Richmond Hotel though - very much recommended.

Day 11: Hakodate Morning Market, Red Brick Warehouses, Mount Hakodate
Saturday broke to what can only be described as "the full Scottish" weather wise. However, being hardy and stubborn buggers we had decided to go to the morning Market in Hakodate so we were bloody well going. After breakfast though of course.

Day 12: Hakodate Harbour Area and Boat Trip, Utility Pole
Sunday in Hakodate and the weather much much better! Decided to have a (small) lie in and then go check out the market and Red Brick Warehouses again, this time not in horizontal rain.

Day 13: Journey to Nikko
Weather horrific again this morning (Monday if you're keeping score) but needed to be up and at 'em fairly early doors as we have (several) trains to catch. Hakodate to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, change at Sendai, then Utsunomiya then, hopefully, Nikko. Fingers crossed.

Day 14: Tōshō-gū Shrine, Kirifuri Falls
Tuesday and our only full day in Nikko so up and at ‘em relatively early (ok, about 8am which wasn’t too stupid). Made the most of the huge amount of choices at the hotel breakfast buffet to set us up for the day, including a bucket of coffee each and then hauled ourselves into town via the hill from, if not “Hell” then certainly its next door neighbour “Heck”. Certainly easier to walk down than up. Still a ten day camel hike though.

Day 15: Journey to Yokohama, Chinatown, Motomachi, Halloween
Since we were basically all packed we strolled at a fairly leisurely pace down to make the most of the hotel buffet breakfast before the last of our major train journeys down to Yokohama. The usual bucket of coffee and several hundredwight of commestibles set us up nicely for the day and so, after saying さよなら to the Fujihashis (who were off to Tōshō-gū later), we checked out and waited for the shuttle bus into town, worried that we might miss our train. We really needn't have worried.

Day 16: Sogo, Yokohama, Torinoichi Festival
Last full day in Japan for this trip then.
It didn't start off too auspiciously but the evening more than made up for it and ended up one of our most memorable of the trip.
Read on...

Day 17: Return Flight
This is just going to be short post just to round off the trip. Don't get all excited - not a lot happened. Let's face it, there's a limit to the entertainment possibilites provided by getting up early and going to an airport...
